As you well know by now, this blog will be dedicated in its entirety to musical theater and its artists, who are better known as triple threats. As my first post about this topic, I would like to talk about my own journey and how I came to do musical theater.

Me and the cast of “La Canción Verde”, one of my first acting experiences.

When I went onto the 10th grade I entered the Escuela Especializada en Bellas Artes Anita Otero Hernández in Humacao, Puerto Rico. This was a performing and visual arts middle school and high school. I entered in the theater concentration. Joining this school was one of the best decisions I ever made. Not only did I participate in all of the theater related activities, I also collaborated with the dance department and was part of the school choir, with whom I traveled to compete outside of Puerto Rico. So in a way, you could say I was running all of the bases that a musical theater artist runs, I was just doing them separately.

After graduating high school, I went on to pursue a degree in film at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in San Juan, Puerto Rico, thinking it would be a nice medium which I could combine with all of my past theater experience. During my first semester I kind of abandoned all of my hobbies; I stopped acting, dancing and singing. I was doing nothing. Then hurricane Maria hit. Hurricane Maria was devastating for Puerto Rico, but it did bless me with one of the best experiences of my life.

Due to the hurricane, I was able to study abroad at NYU (New York University) for a whole semester in their Hurricane Maria Assistance Program. This was were I rekindled with some of my passions. While some of the courses I took were directly related to my major, some I took just to pass a good time. I took theater production were I got the opportunity to crew in three staged musicals, and I also took tap and a dance for actors class. I got theater and dance training in New York City, the Musical Theater capital of the world, what else could I had ask for.

After my semester abroad, I came back to Puerto Rico with a new set of tools, and I was ready to use them. This is when I decided to audition for PSB Productions‘ Beauty and the Beast. This was my first time auditioning for a musical, and I was really nervous, but at the end, to my surprise, I got a part in the ensemble and dance team. We had nine shows this past December at the Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center (yes, the same place were Hamilton was presented). This was my first time doing a musical, and it has been by far one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

Currently, I am in rehearsals, with PSB Productions, for a production of Fiddler on the Roof that will be presented at the Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center this following April. I will be part of the ensemble and dance team in this production as well.

You could say I’m still very new in the musical theater scene, but I’m eager to keep growing in the industry and to keep acquiring experiences along the way.

THIS IS MY MUSICAL THEATER JOURNEY.
