What does the web mean or represent to you?

We live on a highly globalized world where the web has played a huge part in connecting individuals from all around the world in a matter of seconds. In the INF 103 course at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón we have been ask to dig in on what the web represents to us and how it has played a defining role in our lives and society in general.

What is the World Wide Web?

Like everything in life, the web comes with its pros and cons. Like it was mentioned before, thanks to the web and the internet, we are able to connect with people from all around the world within seconds. There is no longer a need to travel to other cities, countries, etc., to learn about them or see what they look like. On a personal sense, the web has allowed me to stay in contact with all of my friends and family even when I haven’t seen them in a long time. Another pro of the web is that it allows us to promote our businesses, art accounts, future projects, etc.

In my case, the web has allowed me to promote my black and white photography art. Most of the photography work I’ve done wouldn’t had made it out of my bedroom if it weren’t for the web. Yet, thanks to the amazing tool that is the web I now have a photography account in instagram called B&W Photography.

This being said, we have to be careful when navigating the web. Even though the web has offered huge advancements and countless possibilities to modern day society, it comes with a big cost, our privacy. Once something’s on the web, there is now way of getting it back. We have to be careful of what we put out there because we never know who is on the other side collecting data about us.

Spanish newspaper reports how Facebook and Twitter know your profile even if you do not have an account, delete it or do not use it.

Would I be able to survive without the web? Probably not. Not because it is intrinsically tied to human survival, my human survival at least, but because somehow we have turned it into a necessity, and I simply can’t imagine a world without it. The web has become a great tool for all of us, the key to a healthy usage of it lies in using it with moderation and always maintaining some safety guidelines to protect our privacy.
