In ancient times, women thought rubies brought fertility, while Burmese warriors inserted real rubies under their skin to protect themselves from injury in battle. In 1996, Roberto Coin started signing the jewels of his iconic Appassionata Collection by setting a small ruby on the inside, hidden, so that the skin could be in direct contact with the gem.
